One of my favorite Kanye West videos of all time 😭

The fact Virgil Abloh filmed it is even crazier… this was during the rollout for Kanye’s 2009 Louis Vuitton collaboration, right as Kanye jokes that after “the red shoes hit the runway” he had to change his name to “Martin Louis the King Jr.” The joke was funny, but the moment really was history. Under Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton gave Kanye one of his first major luxury design opportunities, and the collab produced three sneaker models — the Don, Jasper, and Mr. Hudson — all released in 2009 and named after people in his world. Retail prices reportedly ran from about $840 to $1,140, which made the whole thing feel even bigger at the time. 

What makes this video hit harder now is who’s behind the camera. Virgil was still early in his public rise, working inside Kanye’s creative circle years before Off-White and years before becoming Louis Vuitton’s Men’s Artistic Director himself. The partnership itself started after Kanye and Marc Jacobs connected over Takashi Murakami and ended up talking sneakers for hours. Looking back, this wasn’t just a funny backstage moment. It was an early glimpse at a shift in culture, when rap stopped just wearing luxury and started reshaping it from the inside 👀
