Andzelika Cetera’s #RhodyAbroad journey to #CostaRica offered a firsthand look at global healthcare, supported by the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. 🇨🇷 ✈️

A senior kinesiology major in URI’s accelerated 4+1 program, Andzelika spent J-Term in San José studying Costa Rica’s universal healthcare system through the faculty-led course "Introduction to Global Health," taught by Professor Molly Greaney (uri.chs) and Professor Kerri Ellis (urinursing).

Alongside academic visits to a local university, a private hospital, and the U.S. Embassy, the trip also allowed her to explore Costa Rica’s culture and landscapes through museums, animal rescues, the Poás Volcano, and a rainforest zipline.

Her favorite part, though, was connecting with the local people. "As an aspiring Physical Therapist, this experience reinforced the idea of patient-centered care and the importance of focusing on the needs of the patients rather than profit," Andzelika shared. "This trip broadened my understanding of different healthcare systems and deepened my passion to provide compassionate patient care in the future."

URI was recently named a top producer of Gilman Scholars, with 177 students receiving the prestigious scholarship over the past 25 years. The program helps remove financial barriers so more students can study or intern abroad. You can learn more at the link in our bio ⬆️
