Virginia City: A Step Back in Time

BTSLV recently had the opportunity to visit Virginia City, NV(virginiacity) to do some behind-the-scenes coverage on an upcoming Al Bravo (albravo98) film, and the experience felt less like a work trip and more like stepping through a living time capsule. Walking down C Street, it’s impossible not to feel the weight of history. Many of the buildings lining Main Street remain largely untouched for more than 150 years, preserving the look and feel of a true 19th-century mining boomtown. Weathered wood facades, brick saloons, historic hotels, and old storefronts still stand where miners, merchants, and outlaws once crossed paths during the height of the Comstock Lode.

What makes Virginia City so special is how little has been modernized. Instead of recreations, visitors are often standing inside original structures from the 1860s and 1870s. Places like the Bucket of Blood Saloon, Piper’s Opera House, and the Washoe Club help keep the Old West alive, giving the town an authenticity that feels increasingly rare.

One of the most iconic experiences is riding the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. The historic steam train once hauled silver ore from the Comstock mines and today carries visitors through the high desert and mountain landscapes surrounding the town. The V&T isn’t just a tourist attraction — it’s a working piece of film history.

The railroad and Virginia City itself have been used in more than 100 films and TV productions. Notable projects include Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man starring Johnny Depp, and Paramount’s series 1923. The authentic locomotives, depots, and preserved streets make the town a go-to location for productions seeking a true Old West look.

In a world of sets and CGI, Virginia City stands as a reminder that sometimes the best backdrop is the real thing — a town frozen in time, still telling stories more than a century later.
