Today marks the end of a defining chapter in television history. After nearly 44 years, MTV has officially shut down its remaining 24-hour music-focused channels, signaling the close of an era that once defined how the world discovered music, artists, and culture.

Launched in 1981 with the now-iconic words “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll,” MTV revolutionized entertainment by transforming music videos into cultural events. For decades, the network shaped fashion, sound, and identity—serving as a global launchpad for artists and trends that crossed genres and generations.

As of today, dedicated music channels including MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, MTV Live, MTV Hits, and other region-specific music feeds have ceased operations across many international markets. These channels represented the final remnants of MTV’s original, all-music identity.

MTV itself, however, is not shutting down.

The flagship MTV network—particularly in the United States and select regions—will continue to operate, now focused on entertainment, reality programming, and pop-culture series rather than continuous music video rotation. Long-running franchises such as Teen Mom and Geordie Shore, along with special events and legacy programming, remain part of its active slate.

That era began on August 1, 1981, when MTV premiered its first-ever music video: Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles—a moment that symbolized the arrival of a new medium and a cultural shift that would last more than four decades.
