Save this if Carnival is on your bucket list. You’ll need it when J’Ouvert rolls around.

J’Ouvert with redantscarnival was probably my favorite event of Carnival… second only to Carnival Tuesday itself. As a Carnival newbie who just experienced her first Carnival, I’m making it my mission to make sure YOU are prepared for yours (hopefully next year). And J’Ouvert is a big part of that.

I’ve been your Carnival guinea pig out here doing everything wrong so you don’t have to. So here are my dos and don’ts. Carnival vets, feel free to add to the list!

What to do:
• Wear clothes you don’t care about. The paint, oil, powder, and mud are not coming out. Ever.
• There are different types of J’Ouverts, so pick the one that matches the kind of fun you want. I went with redantscarnival and had a blast. When I told people I played J’Ouvert with Red Ants, the reactions told me they’re a big deal.
• Protect your phone. Waterproof pouch, ziplock bag… something. I took mine out for a minute and now there’s paint stuck in my speaker that refuses to come out.
• Hydrate—and I don’t mean with rum. Rum will absolutely be flowing but your body still needs water or coconut water.
• Eat something before you go. Dancing in the streets for hours on rum alone is a risky life decision.
• Wear comfortable shoes. Not cute shoes. Comfortable shoes. BTW I walked 36,107 steps on Monday.
• Ladies, protect your hair unless you’re okay with paint taking it out the day before Carnival Tuesday.
• Wear baby oil or Vaseline so the paint and oil come off your skin easier.
• If you’re renting a car, bring something to cover the seats. Learned that the hard way too.

What not to do:
• Don’t bring anything valuable. If you’d be sad if it got ruined… leave it at home.
• Don’t expect to stay clean. The entire point is to get messy.
• Don’t show up late. J’Ouvert starts early. If you arrive at sunrise, you’re already late.

After my first J’Ouvert, I finally understand why people wake up at 2 or 3 in the morning for this. And somehow… after all that paint, rum, and 36,000 steps… I’d do it all over again.
