Spring is fast approaching and with that comes the arrival of much-loved visitors like the Sand Martin! 👏

Did you know that the scientific name for Sand Martin, Riparia riparia, comes from the Latin word riparius which means 'of the riverbank'? 🧐

That’s because instead of building cup-shaped, mud or clay nests like their cousins the House Martin & Swallow, instead, they dig tunnels in sand or gravel burrows often along riverbanks or in cliffs.

Keep your eyes to the skies throughout March in search of these early arriving birds. The sight of a Sand Martin promises warmer weather 🌞
