#repost  jotakaeaddy Black women are often subject to overt and subtle disrespect - especially from women who don’t share our culture or struggle. I am grateful for rooms like this, in which I am reminded of my voice and power. 

Within hours of these words and  being honored by blackenterprise with the Luminary award before a room of more than 2000 women of power- I found myself in a deeply concerning conversation with a business colleague-  in short the woman, in the presence of my staff, raised her voice and proceeded to address me in a disrespectful manner. 

  In that moment, I had a choice — 1.  Let it ride and keep moving. 2. Immediately address the disrespect and make clear that it would not be tolerated.  I knew my choice:  I  had an obligation to myself, the room I had just left, and especially my young staff member to address the situation in real time and respectfully remind this woman that I am not the one and especially on today or any day.  Further, it was important to me that the young Black woman who unfortunately experienced this understood that what was happening was not acceptable.  #TeachTheBabies 

As someone who fights for the dignity of all women - let me remind you of this: Never let anyone think they can speak to you any kind of way-  regardless of who they are or your relationship to them.  Protect your peace and, most importantly, your self-respect.
