@octopusslover8 joins Brian Hiatt at The Rolling Stone Studio live at @SXSW, sponsored by @Delta, to talk about his movie debut in 'Wishful Thinking' (which just had its premiere at SXSW), his winding road back to acting, his in-the-works Hulu show, why he'll never call what he does journalism, and much more.

Shane started out posting viral skits on TikTok, and went on to his hit podcast, Therapuss, where he interviews superstars from Charli XCX to Selena Gomez. Now, he's on his way to superstardom himself — after making his Broadway debut, he's acting alongside Maya Hawke and Louis Pullman, and developing a semi-autobiographical comedy series at Hulu.

Jake on his movie debut in Wishful Thinking: "I was super, super, super nervous. My first scene was just me and #mayahawke alone, and I was so scared. And I just remember, her demeanor immediately let my guard down."

Jake on why he stopped acting in high school: "I got in my own way. I was so obsessed with, like, image and, like, being cool and wanting to be perceived a certain way. And I was unmedicated, which sounds silly, but getting on medication really changed my life. I got on medication in 2020 and that's when I felt a shift."

Jake on his interviews vs. journalism: "It is insulting to journalists to say what I do is journalism. There are real journalists out there asking real thoughtful, hard questions. What I am having with people is a conversation. I want to create a comfortable, friendly environment for my guests. I've always said I want my show to feel like — if you were just to sit down with them and get to know them, what it would feel like."

Jake on the impending doom of it all going away: "At the end of eighth grade I was in a Claire's on the Upper West Side and I was like, oh my God, I feel happy right now. And then I just had such a horrible summer and such a horrible beginning of the next few months. And in that moment I was like, I am never, ever saying that I'm happy again."
