The escort came after Iran granted rare permission for two Indian vessels, Shivalik and Nanda Devi, to transit the strait despite a wider blockade imposed following the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel. The tanker, owned by the Shipping Corporation of India, was carrying thousands of tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas that is crucial for India’s domestic energy supply.
The Shivalik crossed the strategic waterway under the protection of Indian naval forces as part of India’s efforts to safeguard its merchant ships and ensure uninterrupted energy imports. Officials said the vessel is transporting more than 92,000 metric tonnes of LPG along with another tanker and is expected to arrive at western Indian ports such as Mundra and Kandla in the coming days. The Strait of Hormuz handles nearly one fifth of the world’s oil and gas shipments, making safe passage through the route critical for global energy markets and particularly for India, which depends heavily on imports from the Middle East.
