There are a million reasons why I don’t listen to Bon Iver anymore. None of them have anything to do with Justin Vernon’s brilliance, or the quiet, aching beauty of those songs that seem to understand things about you before you do. It’s simply this: every time I hear them, something in me breaks open. Memories, losses, late nights, the kind of moments that ask you to sit still and feel everything. If my life were a film, Bon Iver could easily be the entire score—somewhere between a bottle of wine, a long road, and the kind of cry that somehow saves you. So I don’t really put the music on anymore. But when it finds me—uninvited, somewhere unexpected—I stop whatever I’m doing and listen.
