Nostalgia. I remember the smell so vividly. Every Sunday morning walking out the door from my grandparents home and following the sweet scent of burnt sugar and fried dough that lingered through the air. It carried me to a small stand just down the street from where I played soccer as a child.  I’d walk up with my grandmother and see an old woman filling cones made of newspaper with these crispy delights that had been generously dusted with sugar. She had been there for over 30 years doing the same thing each Sunday. Every one of her wrinkles told a story of struggle and survival but also of smiles and joy which was mesmerising and nurturing. She would hand me a warm paper cone filled with these churros and I would close my eyes to breathe in the sweet scent.
