Did you know Britain had a Sikh player in the Wimbledon quarter-finals? 🎾 Me neither, until now…

I’ll be honest – I hadn’t even heard of naikthabains until recently. That’s surprising, given she made the women’s doubles quarter-finals at wimbledon in 2023, representing Britain. Even more surprising when you realise she and Maia Lumsden were the first all-British women’s doubles pair to do so in 40 years.

Naiktha’s story deserves far more attention. Born in Leeds, raised in Australia, with roots in Punjab, India, she now competes proudly for Britain. She’s broken into the world’s top 100 in doubles, yet her achievements have barely been highlighted..

This is exactly why I believe the South Asian media must do more. It’s not enough to only point out underrepresentation. We need to amplify the success stories that exist. Because when young South Asians see athletes like Naiktha on the biggest stages, it gives them belief..

Her journey shows that sports like tennis are not off-limits. That visibility matters. These stories inspire the next generation to dream bigger, whether that’s on the court, on the pitch, or in any arena where our presence has been too small for too long..

Naiktha Bains is an inspirational role model, and I’ll be keeping a close eye on her progress. It’s time we celebrated her properly – and it’s time we made sure she’s not the last..
