A Facebook memory popped up, taking me back 12 years—to a fresh-faced, slightly nervous me on the set of Sky Sports News, just moments before my first-ever live TV interview. It was the morning of the 2013 Asian Football Awards, and I was about to go on national television to speak about South Asian underrepresentation in football.

The night before? Spent rehearsing in front of the mirror, running through my lines while driving, and mentally preparing for every possible question. But no amount of prep could stop imposter syndrome from creeping in. Was I ready? Did I even belong there?

Then—boom. The interview was over in what felt like seconds. And while I might not remember every word I said, I do remember the feeling—buzzing, proud, and knowing I’d just stepped into a whole new space. My social media went wild, and looking back, that moment helped put my advocacy on the map.

Fast forward to today, and the cause remains just as important. I’ve done plenty of interviews since, but I still prep, still feel the nerves, and yes—imposter syndrome still pops up every now and then. But that’s OK. It keeps me learning, growing, and speaking my mind.

Lesson learned? The biggest opportunities often lie just outside our comfort zones. Step up, take the mic, and back yourself—you never know where it might lead.
