As we head into a new week, it’s a good reminder that in youth sport and in life, culture is everything.

And culture doesn’t start with players. It starts with the adults around them.

Young athletes thrive in positive environments. They grow in confidence when they feel supported, encouraged, and safe to make mistakes. But negativity, gossip, sideline politics, and personal criticism quietly do the opposite, they create pressure, anxiety, and take the joy out of the game.

When the focus shifts from lifting people up to pulling people down, we lose sight of what truly matters, which is helping young people to grow, build resilience, and develop both as athletes and as human beings.

Strong communities are built on simple principles:

• Support everyone, not just those closest to us 
• Show respect to coaches, officials, volunteers, and each other 
• Communicate openly and constructively, never behind backs 
• Model the behaviour we want young people to learn 

Because kids are always watching.

They learn how to handle success, adversity, teamwork, and conflict by observing the adults around them.

2. A negative culture create uncertain ones.

Let’s continue to choose encouragement over criticism, unity over division, and growth over ego, and let’s always try to keep the focus where it belongs, on helping young people enjoy the journey, work hard, and become their best and greatest selves.

Our club and all of the programs i provide are there to support young players in their quest for growth , development and achievement. 

Those things cannot happen without clear principles and values of short steps, long vision and stamping out politics or toxicity.
