One of the biggest issues and discussions i have with young athletes is how to navigate the haters. It’s a daunting process for a young person to come to the realisation that not everyone wants you to “do good”.

People who were in your corner when you were happy to stand in the corner , suddenly become very negative and critical of you , when you decide you want to step out of the corner, and into the centre of the ring.

I cannot tell you the amount of hate i have experienced in my life , personally, business and in sport. People who know absolutely nothing about me , grown adults especially 🤦🏻‍♂️😂🤫 yet will make comments and statements, based on little more than immaturity, toxicity or just plain stupidity.

As a young athlete i say to you , ignore the haters. They are a necessary part of your journey towards achieving your goals. It’s part of building the resilience and self assurance you need to succeed in life (not just basketball).

When you sense the change, and you start to become aware of these negative people and things being said about you. See that as a sign of progress, a mark in the sand that you are passing a point of reference in your development that is significant. It means you are moving towards the success and growth that you are trying to accomplish.

Embrace it , don’t allow it or them to stunt your progress or limit your growth. Use it as fuel , as motivation and as inspiration to keep moving forward and build your resilience.

Winning at sports and in life , comes at a cost , and it places you into a very independent and self reliant mindset, one which allows you to block out distractions, other peoples opinions and emotions, and allows you to focus on your own strengths. It is teaching you to be less “emotive” and more productive.

Haters behaviour often reflects their own insecurities, not your potential. Suddenly receiving negative attention can help confirm that you are on the right path.

If you are going to reach your goals, you need to be very resilient, focused and single minded. That means that your energy needs to stay positive, and fuel your own activities. 🫶❤️🏀 #ignorenegativity #hatersgonhate
