We had lunch at The Farm in Byron today, and right as we were deep in conversation, the heavens opened and it absolutely bucketed down. Hugo—true to form—wanted to run in the rain and jump in puddles, wild and free. And instead of pulling him in, I just… let him. He was laughing, squealing, totally in his element.

So I joined him. Soaked to the skin, splashing and laughing and being a kid again too. Honestly, ever since he was born, this has been our rhythm—letting him play in nature, get dirty, feel free. And it’s been healing for me too. It’s reminded me how important play is. How good it feels to let go of control and just be present.

These days, when I go to say “no,” I pause. I ask myself: Why? Is it going to hurt him? Is it going to hurt me? Or is it just my instinct to keep things neat and tidy? And honestly I find saying no all the time, exhausting.

Eventually, Hugo came to us and my darling friend georgia.rhodes dried him off, he climbed into my lap, snuggled in a blanket, calm and content. And it reminded me—sometimes, after we let it all out, we come back to centre.

I’d love to open the conversation gently…
Have you found that letting your little ones run wild helps them regulate, too? Or, in your experience, does too much freedom come back to bite later? No judgement. Just sharing what’s working for us—and wondering how it looks for you.
