We’re going to The White House for the second time this year, so let’s get ready together! First of all, I was so nervous. I decided to wear a very traditional saree from my mother-in-law instead of one of those modern, blingy lehengas. Ever since I got the invite, I knew I wanted to wear something meaningful, something I could pass down to my daughter.

But on the way there, in the Uber, I was on the phone with my mom and told her I wanted to turn around and change my outfit. The Uber driver and my mom were like, ‘No,’ and I was like, ‘Yes.’ It went back and forth until my mom pulled out her chappal on our video call... 

Then, I remembered those times growing up when I didn’t want to be seen in Indian clothes. And now, here I am, wearing the most beautiful saree that connects generations of women—to The White House. At that moment, I thought, ‘Dang, I look good!’ More importantly, I felt proud. I want us all to carry this feeling of legacy and pride today on Election Day because each of our votes matters so much. Vote and make your voice heard!
