Black vest and white veil

For those who live on the edge of the desert like the black rabari people, the very strong sunlight, the reflections of the light sand and prolonged exposure often cause premature blindness, I have met many elderly people with serious eyes problems, you notice it immediately because they observe you uncertainly through veiled irises and pupils. the life of this elderly woman takes place between the walls of the tiny house and her small courtyard which, despite everything, she always tries to keep clear of the advancing desert. she sees through memory aided by small placeholders that delimit her world. at a certain point it seems she smiles at me and understands that I’m looking at her.

Per chi vive al limitare del deserto come i black rabari la luce del sole molto forte, i riflessi della sabbia chiara e l’esposizione prolungata sono spesso causa di cecità precoce, ho incontrato molte persone anziane con gravi problemi di vista, lo noti subito perchè ti osservano incerti attraverso iridi e pupille velate. la vita di questa anziana donna si svolge tra la mura della minuscola casa e il suo piccolo cortile che nonostante tutto lei cerca di tenere sempre sgombro dall’avanzare del deserto. lei vede attraverso la memoria aiutata da piccoli segnaposto che delimitano il suo mondo. sembra ad in certo punto mi sorrida e abbia capito che la sto guardando.
