Sikerei

the last Sikerei, the shamans of the Mentawai people, live on a remote island in the “Sonda” archipelago off the coast of Sumatra. Their traditions survived the long colonial occupation and subsequently Sukarno’s nationalist government, thanks to the great isolation, the tenacity of these people and the impenetrable equatorial forest. The great green Mother protected the Mentawai population of which the Sikerei represent the traditional soul linked to the cult of nature and the spirits that animate it. After having experienced the rise and decline of the “India Company”, of Western raiders, of local generals and coups d’état, today the last exponents of this ancient tradition see their lifestyle threatened by a god who does not consider nature but inhabits in the greed of mankind. The very profitable palm oil industry increasingly threatens this last virgin forest sanctuary and with it biodiversity and peoples with millenary traditions who, in balance with the world that hosts them, are its last guardians.

gli ultimi Sikerei, gli shamani del popolo Mentawai, vivono in una remota isola dell’arcipelago della “Sonda” al largo di Sumatra. Le loro tradizioni sono sopravvissute alla lunga occupazione coloniale e successivamente al governo nazionalista di Sukarno, grazie al grande isolamento, alla  tenacia di questo popolo e alla foresta equatoriale impenetrabile. La grande Madre verde ha protetto la popolazione Mentawai di cui i Sikerei rappresentano l’anima tradizionale legata al culto della natura e degli spiriti che la animano. Dopo aver vissuto ascesa e declino della “Compagnia delle Indie”, di predoni occidentali, di generali locali e colpi di stato, oggi gli ultimi esponenti di questa antica tradizione vedono minacciato il loro stile di vita da un dio che non considera la natura ma abita nell’avidità del genere umano. L’industria molto redditizia dell’olio si palma minaccia  sempre più questo ultimo santuario di foresta vergine e con essa biodiversità e popoli dalle tradizioni millenarie che in equilibro col mondo che li ospita ne sono gli ultimi guardiani.
