This staircase was an incredible piece of luck!

And it might be the thing I’m most thrilled with in the barn so far, not just because I love it, but because of how we got it. 

We’d realized we just couldn’t afford the staircase of our dreams. 

There WERE some out of the box ones that we could have stretched to, but they felt clunky and wrong for the elegance of the barn. 

So then I started calling manufacturers and it turns out that spiral staircases are much cheaper than standard ones. Who knew?! 

For a moment we were excited, but even those were out of our budget. 

We were completely stuck! 

Then an email landed in my inbox. 

completestairsystems said they’d had this solid oak spiral staircase sitting in their warehouse for months, made years ago, removed from its original house and they thought it just might fit our space. 

So with a bit of bargaining and me agreeing to sand it all down myself, we got this beautiful £15k staircase for £1.8k!!! 

It was actually 14mm too short, so Nick completestairsystems, who was absolutely brilliant, made some custom metal shims to raise each step just enough to get it to the perfect height. 

Our lovely carpenter then installed it. It was a challenge, because it was very heavy, but totally worth it. 

We are in love with it!

Now the big question - 

Do we - 

Strip it back to the raw oak, wax it and paint the metalwork cream, so that it feels like a beautiful pale organic sculpture in the middle of the colourful barn. 

OR

Paint the whole thing one beautiful colour - pale blue or pale green. 

OR

Leave it as it is?
