BLOOD-MA

I meet her as she returns from the small village church to her hut hidden in the forest. Rosemary knows the path and can predict the duration of the heavy tropical rain. She moves calmly even though sky and earth are indistinguishable due to the thick fog and the showers of water.
As she walks she contemplates the mysterious forest and reflects on her past. The forest today is her refuge, a place where she feels free, far from the judging gazes of her community. But there is a story to tell made of superstition, fear and courage.
Although rural Papua appears today as a natural paradise, a kingdom of serenity and harmony, in the past and in many remote corners of the country a shadow had crept in, affecting the lives of many.
Once upon a time, her people believed in the dark practice of Sanguma, a sort of witchcraft which, according to popular tradition, made some women responsible for misfortunes and calamities. Ignorance pushed many women like Rosemary to be persecuted, blamed and accused of crimes against the community such as sudden fevers, failed crops or missing chickens.
However, time has brought with it a light of hope. Today, Rosemary and many other women have learned to fight against this superstition through awareness and communication, sharing their stories in search of support and mutual protection to challenge those ancestral beliefs that have frightened them for so long.
The archaic mentality and the perception of the role of women in society are complex issues and subject to a very slow change of which we can only see the first signs. Her story of courage and compassion reminds us that through knowledge we can defeat prejudices and put an end to the condemnation of diversity.
