Removing the roof for the bats!

Morning everyone! First of all, thank you so much for all your amazing money saving advice on my last post - I’m gradually replying to all of you :) Thank you!

So, back to the roof ….

Our bat license conditions stipulated that we had to remove the roof no earlier than the 1st October and no later than the 31st October, so that’s been the first - very fun - project!

Our building team, led by the fab tombuilderx are being brilliant and removed it in super fast time - helped momentarily by me! And they’re teaching me various skills along the way.

By removing the roof, we destroy the maternity roost of brown long eared bats and make it uninhabitable for them.

Sounds brutal, I know! But the reason for doing it in October is because all the bats should have left by then, because our roof isn’t a suitable hibernation site (although you’ll have seen from my Stories that there were still a family of 5 sleeping in the rafters!).

So the ecologist carefully moved them to the bat boxes which we’d already placed in nearby trees.

Once the roof was off, two ecologists had to check that there were no more bats and that the roof was now uninhabitable.

But we can’t rebuild the roof yet, because we have to wait for an S73 variation to our planning permission to be approved, because we decided to ditch the dormers and do veluxes instead, because they were going to add £70k to the budget!

Fingers crossed it comes through before the weather gets too bad.

So this morning, I’ll be doing a bit of brick laying stuff that the builders taught me yesterday (Look out for it on Stories). This is to build the foundations for the bats’ new house!

What are you guys all up to?

Oh and by the way, I’ve learnt sooo much about planning and building with bats now, so if you have any questions, hit me up.🙌🏻
