How to make your cat less allergenic

Thank you soooo much to everyone who gave advice on my last post about whether or not we should keep Shelley the former wild cat.

This reel shows you why we started domesticating her in the first place!

The previous owners had been giving her food outside for years when she was still wild, but they kept their two chickens in a small coop and run.

When we arrived 18 months ago we wanted to let the chickens run free - and they LOVED it!

Sadly, one died in her sleep of old age, so we were left with just Maddie, this black one. Who then literally tried to rule the roost - and when I say roost I mean rule the farmhouse, the cat, the dog, US and the whole 10 acre grounds!

She started chasing Shelley the cat round the garden to steal her food. That chicken could run FAST. And she wasn’t phased by Shelley whacking her across the face.

So we started coaxing the cat inside the farmhouse to eat her food in peace and quiet, while we quickly shut the door before the chicken could get in too.

And one day in November she just never left after eating her dinner.

But what did we decide?

Well, you all gave us SUCH great advice about how to make her less allergenic that we’ve decided to put all that into practice first to see if that makes a difference, because we love her and we WANT to keep looking after her.

I’ve summarized the main points here, which I’ve also checked independently, if you want to save for future reference -

> Feed her Purina Live Clear cat food which contains an egg protein, which inhibits the allergen in the saliva.

> Same principle - Feed her farm fresh eggs from chickens who have been reared with a cat.

> Brush her regularly outside to reduce dander

> When allergic visitors come spray or wipe her with a dander reducing fluid

> Put a HEPA air filter in all the rooms.

> Vacuum all your interiors, floors, soft furnishings, with a HEPA filter vacuum cleaner and empty the bag outside.

Happy Tuesday everyone!
