Some images as a photographer…you just can’t believe they don’t get published. Perhaps if you knew how this was captured you might appreciate it more? 

I’ve never posted this image, and it was captured in December 28th of 2022, a deep and trackless morning. On this particular day, I ventured out to capture something unique, a first-person perspective of skiing powder. I’ve attempted to capture this image multiple times before, and multiple times after, to no avail. 

With the shutter speed set to 1/50th second (aka: very slow), I intended to ski as close to athlete Powell Eastman pow_ell as possible. Absolutely, nearly, impossible. So god damn hard. Literally my knees…MCL, ACL, and ACHILLES, are grimacing within the simple memory of barely holding on while dodging trees and quickly adjusting based on Powell’s movements. 

This is what we photographers call a “Motion Blur”, a slow shutter speed, keeping the camera steadily focused on the subject so they’re crisp while the background is blurry. 

In this moment everything aligned, what I consider one of my favorite ski shots of all time. I’m practically skiing within Powell’s white room, his white room…not mine. 

This image somehow hasn’t been run in ski magazines, but I couldn’t care less. It’s an interesting scenario though. Often times when you capture an incredible ski image, you don’t post it, assuming it will run somewhere. Then in the submission process the magazines will place a hold on a select number of images, perhaps choosing to run none of them. It’s tough in these scenarios, as photographers, we miss the opportunity of immediacy, posting when the image is relevant…when it has a certain uummfff behind it. When it’s turned down, we’re left to posting mid-summer, or disguising it the next season, attempting to drum-up a relevant caption to capture the same impact that it would’ve had…thus benefitting the athlete and our work.

Ohh well. Just a weird part of the Biz! There’s a lot of great imagery out there, but regardless, I’m stoked to share this with you finally. Skiing pow is one of the best feelings in life!
