Off the cutting room floor… so many hilarious moments like this and other major details that didn’t make the final film. For those unfamiliar with Tom’s career, Tom’s style invented the term “Afterbang”, coining the phrase for a specific landing style of a skier on a terrain-park feature, making the landing of a jump or railslide look effortless and motionless from a body-movement standpoint.

It’s fascinating how nuanced body positioning is while shooting action sports. Every sport has do’s and don’ts, the exact proper form to showcase, along with finite stylistic preferences of a professional level athlete. To capture the best imagery as a photographer, you must know the sport itself, and actively participating in that sport often times at a high level is what separates imagery that looks authentic, and imagery that looks contrived. 

It was badass to work with Tom, who is a true professional of his sport from an athletic standpoint, but also a business standpoint. During the entire shoot we were on the same page about the most minuscule details, but it’s always a back-and-forth, listening to the preference of the athlete to ensure their safety and the best possible results behind the lens.
