Desert Midnight Oasis

140-seconds single frame exposure - F4.5 - 20mm - ISO 320

One of my favorite desert captures. Illuminating a desert alcove deep within Glen Canyon during peak autumn foliage in Southern Utah. It’s always exciting to visualize a different dimension, essentially studio lighting these massive outdoor scenes to showcase different colors and textures. 

This image was captured via 4 separate lights (2x Lume Cubes, and 2x headlamps), with a Lume Cube’s positioned behind the back right tree (backlighting it), another Lume Cube illuminating the canyon alcove wall, my brother bennywetzel utilizing a headlamp light painting the left trees with perfect execution, and finally, my headlamp off the camera above and to the right…flashing just a few seconds of light…top down onto the falls to mimic studio soft lighting. 

It wouldn’t have been possible to capture this image without the patient assistance of my brother bennywetzel, he’s been by my side for years helping me out without complaint. I can’t thank him enough, and all of my friends and athletes that commit to my vision and are motivated to help. I’m forever indebted to y’all, and I can’t wait to give back more in the future.
