You have to know the difference between someone seeking connection and someone seeking validation.

Someone who wants connection shows curiosity, respect, and engagement. They’re interested in who you are, not just what you can give them in the moment.

Someone who wants validation is different. They expect you to entertain them. They expect attention. They show up knowing you’re interested and treat your interest like something they’re doing you a favor by acknowledging.

That’s not connection. That’s ego maintenance.

If someone disrespects you, dismisses you, or expects you to perform for their approval, they were never interested in you. They were interested in the attention you provide.

At that point the test isn’t about them. It’s about you.

If you’re not willing to walk away from disrespect, you’re teaching people how to treat you.

Self-respect is the boundary that turns validation seekers away and makes room for real connection.
