How Low Can You Go?

What's the minimum effective dose of resistance training (for health) 💪🧠🦴

For too long, strength training has been framed as “for big muscles” or sport performance. But resistance training (RT) is healthcare: it supports mobility, protects against sarcopenia, improves metabolic health, and strengthens bone. It's also a HUGE investment in your healthspan!

We already know aerobic exercise matters for heart health. But the biggest health payoff seems to come when aerobic and strength are combined (observationally linked with the lowest all-cause mortality risk).

Problem:
We have a strength compliance crisis.
A large review (2.6M+ participants) suggests only ~22.8% of adults meet muscle-strengthening guidelines (and that’s self-report, so the real number may be lower).

Good news: the “dose” for benefits is likely much lower than most people think.

What the latest science suggests:
✅ Small volumes can work
Meaningful adaptations may occur with as little as:
• ~4 working sets per muscle group per week for hypertrophy
• ~2–3 working sets per exercise per week for strength
This makes single-set training a viable option for busy humans.

✅ You do not need to train to failure
Stopping about 2 reps shy of failure (Repetitions In Reserve ~2) can still produce excellent results, especially for beginners and returners.

✅ Time-efficient strategies improve adherence
Prioritize multi-joint moves, keep volume modest, and be consistent.

The takeaway
If you are among the ~77% not doing strengthening work, start small.
👉 One set, twice a week.
That can be ~20 minutes total. The best programme is the one you actually do.
This may be the biggest 'pay it forward' investment in your healthspan you can make to make you the best you!
