💥 Power over age 💥
The September/October 2025 issue of ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal® shines a spotlight on this topic. In their article “Antifrail: Why Muscle (Power) Matters in Aging”, Ashley Gluchowski, Ph.D., and I explain why preserving muscle power—not just strength—is essential for resilience and quality of life.
We often talk about “strength” as we age—but it’s muscle power that predicts independence, mobility, and fall prevention. Power is the ability to move quickly and forcefully—whether rising from a chair, climbing stairs, or catching yourself from a stumble.

✅ Safety first: Power training, when done correctly, is safe for older adults. Research indicates that with gradual progression, supervision, and proper exercise selection, older adults can train for Power without an increased risk of injury.

📝 Want to know how? This issue provides practical guidance:
• “The Power of Assessments for Optimizing Fitness, Function, and Fall Risk in Older Adults” — Joseph F. Signorile, Ph.D. & Christian J. Thompson, Ph.D.
• “Exercise Prescription for Power in Older Adults: A Case Study Approach” — Zachary A. Mang, Ph.D. & Maren S. Fragala, Ph.D.
• “Proficiencies for Enhancing Power: Teaching Derivatives, Drills, and Skills” — Christopher B. Taber, Ph.D. & Timothy J. Suchomel, Ph.D.
• “Principles of Power Training for Older Exercise Enthusiasts: Dos and Don’ts” — N. Travis Triplett, Ph.D.

Together, these articles provide a roadmap for safe, effective, and empowering training strategies to help older adults stay strong, quick, and independent.

👟 Take-home message: Don’t just build strength—train for Power. It’s the difference between simply aging … and aging antifrail. Link in Bio
