THE DEATH OF EXPERTISE AND RISE OF THE GRIFTER

Science is increasingly filtered through narrative reviews—expert opinions purporting to summarize evidence but lacking original data—allowing misinterpretation (Nichols, 2017). Narrative reviews aren't science but opinions, which state or claim things that are often simply ideas and with no rigorous testing - they aren't studies. There is often no engagement with primary data.

In The Death of Expertise, Nichols argues that when data are stripped from context or cherry-picked, conclusions become skewed and public trust erodes (Nichols, 2017).

Too often, individuals extract a single quote from a review, misquote it to fit preconceived narratives, and assert they have “fact-checked” the claim—when, in reality, they never engaged with the primary data (Nichols, 2017).

Consequence? Science is reduced to soundbites. We must demand that claims cite original research, not just recycled opinions, and hold ourselves accountable by verifying data sources directly. Only then can we resist the death of expertise and ensure that science remains a tool for truth, not just another narrative.

Trust sources that you know. Better yet, learn some skills as to how to spot fake science. The drop in daily energy expenditure in this claim is an order of magnitude greater than any body composition shift and change you'd expect. Changes in hormones do not explain this. The fact that women gain weight in menopause is NOT proof this is real. orangetheory should be embarrassed by this post and their role in spreading disinformation!
