💪🦴 Boost Your Bones 🦴💪
Menopause accelerates bone loss, raising fracture risk and impacting quality of life. A recent systematic review and network meta-analysis of 49 RCTs (3 360 women) compared eight exercise modalities for spinal and hip bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women :
• Best for Lumbar Spine:
– Combined Aerobic + Resistance (AE + RT) (+32 MD)
– Aerobic alone (AE) (+22 MD)
– Resistance alone (RT) (+17 MD)
• Best for Femoral Neck:
– AE + RT (+140 MD)
– Whole-Body Vibration (WBV) (+26 MD)
– RT (+17 MD)
(“p-score” rankings confirm AE + RT leads at both sites.)
🦵🦿 Meanwhile, a separate meta-analysis showed low-moderate loads (16+ reps @ <65% 1RM or 8–15 reps @ 65–80% 1RM) significantly improve spine & hip BMD—heavy weights aren’t required!
Exercise Tips for Bone Health
Combine modalities: Mix brisk walking, jumping, impact aerobics, or WBV with 2–3 RT sessions (bodyweight or dumbbells).
Aim for moderate loads: 8–15 reps at ∼65–80% of your 1RM—or even higher reps with lighter resistance—are effective.
Frequency: 2–4 sessions/week, 30–60 min/session.
Consistency: Long-term commitment (≥6 months) yields the best bone gains.
🌟 Bottom Line: You don’t need to lift heavy to strengthen your skeleton. A well-rounded program of moderate-intensity aerobic and resistance, can powerfully preserve and build bone in postmenopausal women. 🌟
