## Caption

At 16, my parents let me know I was not wanted. They kicked me out of my room, put me in the garage, and charged me rent to sleep there.

I had to hand over part of my meger fast food paycheck just to have a roof over my head while they reminded me it was one step closer to getting me out of their lives.

It hurt. 

Of course it did.

 But it also freed me from any illusion of belonging in a place where I was not welcome.

That pain pushed me into the world. I have been to 52 countries. I speak three languages. I have met people I never would have met, lived stories I never would have lived, and built a life that never would have existed if I had stayed where I was unwanted.

Sometimes rejection cuts deep, but it is often a tactical redirect placed in your path to move you somewhere better. It feels like loss, but it becomes liberation.
