Sometimes we forget to rest. Reset your mind, heart, and soul with this ancient meditation method the Tibetan Monks use:

The Practice of Tonglen
This ritual is designed to cultivate radical compassion by “breathing in” suffering and “breathing out” peace.

1. Preparation (The Outer Ritual)
• Posture: Sit in the “Seven-Point Posture of Vairocana” (essentially, a straight spine, legs crossed, hands in your lap, and chin slightly tucked).
• The Breath: Take three deep, slow breaths. Imagine your mind becoming as vast and clear as an empty sky.

2. Flash on Bodhicitta (The Intention)
Briefly connect with the idea of Bodhicitta—the wish to achieve enlightenment for the benefit of all beings. Remind yourself that you are doing this practice not just for yourself, but for everyone.

3. The Visualization (The Inner Ritual)
This is the core of the ancient practice, utilizing a “reverse” breathing technique:
• The Inhale: As you breathe in, visualize the suffering, anxiety, or pain of a specific person (or the world) as a thick, heavy, black smoke. Breathe this smoke into your heart center.
• The Transformation: Imagine that at your heart, your ego or “self-grasping” is a hard rock. The black smoke hits this rock and shatters it, turning the smoke into pure, brilliant white light.
• The Exhale: As you breathe out, visualize this brilliant white light—representing peace, healing, and joy—radiating out to the person or the world, giving them exactly what they need.

4. Expanding the Scope
Start with someone you love, then move to yourself, then to a “neutral” person, and finally (if you feel ready) to someone you find difficult.
