How to Spot a Lie: The 3 Channels Experts Watch - a segment from a podcast I was on a year ago.

It's a common question, in life, negotiations, and business: How do we know if someone is lying to us? Having worked as a human lie detector in the polygraph unit and as a seasoned interrogator trained in lie detection, here are a few things to look out for.

Lie detection is both an "art" and a science that requires observing three means of communication working in sync: words, tone of voice, and body language.

If all three channels are not working together, something is "off", and you'd better be paying attention.

3 Key Ways to Detect Deception (The "Off" Signs):

1. Evasion, Not an Answer: When asked a simple "yes or no" question (e.g., "Did you steal that money?"), the first thing to come out of an innocent person's lips should be "no". It's a 'yes' or 'no' question. A deceptive response often involves telling a story, shifting the topic, or giving reasons instead of a direct answer (e.g., "Why would I steal that money? I have a good job."). Anybody who avoids answering a yes or no question with a bunch of filler and deflection ought to be considered suspicious.

2. Be aware of the Fight or Flight Response: Under extreme pressure, the body begins to "fall apart" as the blood starts circulating more rapidly, and the body goes into a fight or flight state. Look for sudden shifts or nervous movements that indicate panic:

 ◦ Crossing their arms or looking away.

 ◦ Scratching, picking lint off clothing, or playing with their hair.

 ◦ A higher pitch in their voice.

 ◦ A delayed response time.

3. Know Their Norm (Homeostasis): You cannot simply look for these signs "right off the bat". Before introducing the high-pressure topic, you must establish the individual’s baseline behavior, or "homeostasis".

 ◦ Talk about neutral subjects (the weather, their job, etc.) to observe them when they are "calm and cool and collected". When you introduce the topic, watch for the breakdown, if any.

All 3 means of communication must work in harmony: Words, Tone of Voice, and Body Language.

Hope this helps.
