Here’s a science-backed reason to catch the sunrise: It can improve your sleep quality and overall health.

Let me break it down for you:

Think of your body as a car, and your brain as the engine. Morning sunlight acts like the perfect fuel and tuning session for your engine, helping your internal clock (the circadian rhythm) run efficiently.

Here’s what happens when you expose your eyes to morning sunlight:

1. Retinal Light Sensors at Work
Your eyes have special neurons called retinal ganglion cells, which contain a pigment called melanopsin. These cells detect light & send signals to your brain’s suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN)—your body’s master clock.

2. Resetting Your Circadian Rhythm
This signal tells your brain: Stop melatonin (sleep hormone) production, it’s time to wake up!

Later in the evening, it ensures melatonin is released at the right time, helping you fall asleep easily and get deeper, restorative sleep.

3. Why It Works Like Tuning a Car
Just as a well-tuned car gives you a smooth ride, a properly reset circadian clock ensures you’re alert during the day and sleep well at night. If you skip this “tune-up” (morning sunlight), your system may run inefficiently, leading to grogginess and poor sleep.

Backed by Research:

A. Research in Nature Neuroscience shows how light exposure influences circadian rhythms via melanopsin-containing retinal neurons. (Doi.org/10.1038/nn.2904)

B. Another study shows how morning light improves next morning alertness (PMID 36058557)

Pro tip: Step outside for 15–30 minutes every morning, preferably within an hour of waking up. Let your eyes absorb sunlight but make sure it is not harsh/unbearable for the eyes.

See you on the fit side,
OC
