Acute vs Chronic

Is exercise bad for your sugar(Diabetes) & heart health?

If you see the acute response by measuring glucose, blood pressure & heart rate readings - these will be way off the normal range as compared to rested or fasted state.

However, chronically - over a longer period of time such as 3 months - exercise actually helps in management of glucose & blood pressure. Ofcourse, keeping in mind that the correct amount of exercise is prescribed in terms of load, intensity, selection & gradually progression as per the calculations.

Human body can manage itself when it is shifted out of state of homeostasis.

You can think of hepatic (liver) glucose output during exercise as a feedback mechanism.
It would sense & adjust to meet energy demands.

Just like how the ‘auto AC’ mode button in the car adjusts based on how much the temperature in the car is, the liver adjusts its glucose output based on the intensity and duration of exercise, making sure your body has enough energy to keep moving.

The Bottomline:
Take measurements pre & post workout, create graphs & interpret data, but see the difference between acute & chronic response of the body & then come to any decision. Also, if there are any drastic fluctuations that you observe, please involve your doctor / physician while taking any decision regarding exercise/nutrition.

See you on the fit side,
Omkar
