Protein Scoop after Workout? 🧐😳

Another myth busted!

Remember the exams in school? We used to ask for a ‘supplement’ answer sheet only when the ‘main sheet’ was inadequate. Supplementing with protein is very similar.

You might be wondering, but why did my trainer or nutritionist ask me to have whey protein then? There are 2 scenarios that can be possible here:

Your trainer/nutritionist is probably working with a supplement store or company and earns commission by selling products
Your trainer/nutritionist is aware of your eating and knows that you aren’t getting enough protein through your diet. Your body requires some minimum amount of protein as a baseline to maintain or build muscle.

Many people believe that they are consuming enough protein, and many consume whey protein just because others in gyms do.
Understanding your body’s requirements is really important. Choosing primarily whole foods to complete the daily protein intake and supplementing the remaining is what should be done. If you have the option of consuming enough protein from whole foods, you don't need a protein scoop after workout.

Another reason why your trainer/nutritionist might suggest you to have protein powder post workout is to build a habit of consuming enough protein. This is a good strategy to implement if you tend to skip out on protein throughout the day. But if you are concerned about consuming protein powder immediately after workouts because of the anabolic window, it's really unnecessary to worry about it because muscle protein synthesis is a long process and takes much longer than the allegedly claimed so-called ‘40 minute anabolic window’.

To summarise, if you are consuming enough protein rich food such as Meat, Eggs, Paneer throughout the day, you don’t need supplementation with whey protein. If you aren’t consuming enough protein, try to increase the intake of protein by whole foods, and then go for supplementation if necessary.
