On this #InternationalWomensDay, I honor Malalai of Maiwand—the teenage shepherdess warrior who defied an empire and became Afghanistan’s eternal symbol of courage.

The Battle of Maiwand, 1880
During the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-1880), the British launched an attack on Afghan warriors in Maiwand District, Kandahar. As Afghan commanders fell and retreat seemed inevitable, Malalai, a 17-year-old village girl, rushed onto the battlefield. Holding the fallen flag high, she cried:

🔥 “If you die here, you become immortal! If you flee, you drown in shame!”

Her words revived Afghan spirits, turning the tide of battle. The British suffered a crushing defeat, but Malalai was struck by a bullet and martyred, her name forever tied to the land she saved.

Why She’s Called “Malalai of Maiwand”
Born in Maiwand District, her name became synonymous with resistance. Today, “Maiwand” is more than a place—it’s a symbol of Afghan defiance.

Visiting Maiwand in 2024 – 144 Years Later

I grew up hearing Malalai’s story, but it wasn’t until last year (2024) that I finally stood at her grave in Maiwand District—144 years after she made history. The air there felt different—as if the spirit of Pashtun warriors still lingers.

As I paid my respects, local children noticed us. Moments later, the boys returned with a bowl of shlombay—the Afghan version of Ayran. In Kandahar, it’s always served in a metal bowl, thick and cooling, perfect for the heat.

Nearby, a little girl with bright green eyes and a dusty red dress watched shyly, smiling—a reminder of the kindness that has endured for centuries.
