Had the privilege of speaking to an incredible woman last week—Ruby McBurney (Crump), the daughter of William Crump, one of the 266 miners lost in the Gresford Mining Disaster, one of the worst mining disasters in UK history. This tragedy devastated Wrexham in 1934 and changed the course of its history forever.

We’re working on a documentary to uncover the facts about this disaster: the harsh and unsafe conditions that led to it, the heartbreaking decision to seal the mine with men still inside, and the injustices faced by families in the aftermath. The mining industry built Wrexham, but with this disaster, it also brought unimaginable loss. Its impact is still felt today, even as the town continues to rebuild.

Ruby Crump, known as “The Warrior,” has been a campaigner for the awareness and remembrance of this tragedy for decades. We had the honour of interviewing Ruby and her daughter, Karen, to hear their powerful perspectives, and it marks the beginning of our journey to tell this important story.

This documentary will explore the history of Wrexham as a mining town, and will examine how the Gresford Mining Disaster shaped the town and its people. It will also highlight the close connection to the football club, with some players having worked in the mines themselves.

We’d love to hear from you. If you or your family have stories, memories, or experiences connected to the Gresford Mining Disaster, please get in touch through comments or DM. Thank you 🙏🏽
