I thought I’d set myself a little challenge to see what shape I could get into, as I turn 43 next week, I’ve dropped a little body fat and I’ve done this by being in a calorie deficit.

But what is a “calorie deficit” and how does that effect losing weight?

This question keeps popping up in my DMs and email inbox so I thought I would explain what a calorie deficit actually is and what it actually means.

If you don’t get this now, you will after reading this post. It will also help you navigate your own fat loss journey , if that’s your goal.

Everybody in the world has a thing called a “basal metabolic rate” - this is usually referred to as your BMR.
This gives the number of calories you need on a day to day basis just to survive and maintain the shape you are.

To lose weight, reduce your inches and look more toned you need to consume less than your maintenance number. This means going into a “calorie deficit” which is to consume less than you spend.

***YOU CAN’T LOSE WEIGHT WITHOUT BEING IN A CALORIE DEFICIT***

Take saving money for example...

To save enough to buy those shoes you want, you need to spend less money than you make, over time allowing the money to build up.

Losing weight is the same really except you need to spend more than you’re saving, in this context. Over time, you lose weight and your body fat will reduce.

If you need help working out what your calorie needs actually are, DM me and I can show you how to start working it out :)...

Do you need help getting started?
DM “ more info “ to make a change.
