I hated public speaking 30 years ago. 

From my leadership position, I occasionally had to speak in public. 

Watch my mouth 🫣 Waiting a lot 😬 Sweaty 😅 

It was 2000. Amsterdam. Classic Theater, with sexy red velvet interior.

After my talk, I wanted to get the fuck out. 

Cool off 💨 Smoke a cigarette. 

The host asked: Can you wait? 

Mmmm okay 🫨 I mumbled politely. 

After the show he said, do you want to be a speaker?? You should go for it.

Nooo thanks, I said. I hate it, public shizzle.. 

I do not agree, he said. I will ask Speakers Academy to plan an intake! 

I said: But that’s Rotterdam! I live in Amsterdam 🤗

Long story short? They took me in. 

Nothing happened for weeks.

I forgot about it.

Then came the call ☎️ Are you available 24 May 2000? Austria, global tech summit, opening speech. Their budget is €10k ex travel etc, we keep 20%.

It’s my birthday, I said. ♊️ hoping they would find me ungrateful and call 📞 another speaker. 

Great they said, because the location is spectacular, castle at a lake. 

We will send you the briefing, contract and confirm! 

WTF 🤯 

Now what? My first? Paid gig ever 🐣

I didn’t sleep for 2 nights. 

My mouth was so dry. My back was soaking wet. 

The first 5 minutes were a living hell 🥵

Never again, I swore! 

That night? I slept like a baby. I flew back home and  thought 💭 game over. Fucked this up. 

A few days later? Speaker Academy: “They are happy and want to book you back for their EMEA summit in September.” 

Can you do 1 hour plus Q&A this time? For the same fee? 

Years later, I partnered with a management agency. They did DJs. I was the only speaker 😆😇

Do you have a signature talk? 

A what??? No. No clue 😙

Do you have a signature style? 

A what???? 

Your visual stage and screen identity? 

What the fuck?! 😝 what do you mean? White beard, black outfit, white sneakers 👟??? 

For example. What do you wear now? On stages and screens? 

Uhhhhhh what I can find in my closet 🤓🧐🤨
