Statins are widely prescribed to lower cholesterol and protect the heart, but they come with a hidden cost: depletion of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)

CoQ10 is a critical nutrient needed for energy production, heart function, and muscle health. Statins block the same pathway that produces cholesterol and CoQ10, leading to a significant drop in CoQ10 levels within weeks of starting treatment. 

In fact, clinical studies show reductions of up to 40% in blood and muscle CoQ10 levels after statin therapy begins. This plays a major role in statin-associated muscle symptoms, including pain and weakness, which are common reasons patients stop taking their medication.

Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses demonstrate that CoQ10 supplementation can significantly improve these muscle symptoms and improve statin tolerance. For example, a 2024 meta-analysis of 5 RCTs including 800 patients showed clear benefits of CoQ10 in reducing statin-induced myalgia without side effects. Other studies confirm rapid decreases in CoQ10 levels within 2-4 weeks of starting statins, highlighting the need for proactive management.

If you’re prescribed a statin, insist your doctor monitor your CoQ10 status and recommend supplementation if needed. Treating just the cholesterol number is not enough—you need whole-body care to truly protect your heart and muscles.
