Definition: 

The Madonna-Whore Dichotomy (MWD) is a patriarchal, psychological, and literary construct that categorizes women into two polarized, mutually exclusive groups: pure, nurturing “Madonnas” worthy of love, or sexualized, wanton “whores” worthy only of lust. Originating from Sigmund Freud’s “Madonna-Whore Complex,” this rigid view, where men cannot desire women they respect, is rooted in misogyny and restricts female autonomy. 

Key Aspects of the Dichotomy:

The Madonna: Represents virginal purity, domesticity, goodness, and maternal, nurturing qualities.

The Whore: Represents sexual desire, wantonness, and, in some interpretations, perceived as manipulative or inherently bad.
Origin & Usage: Coined by Sigmund Freud, it describes an inability to maintain sexual arousal within a committed, loving relationship. The man loves the Madonna but desires the “degraded” whore.

Impact: Perpetuates sexist attitudes, reinforces gender inequality, and often leads to lower relationship satisfaction.
