- Design the staircase as a sculptural object
- Use a consistent material palette with the staircase and the rest of the home
- Design the first step in a larger scale and as a contrasting design
- Consider the handrail from the outset - it is necessary for health and safety and the building regulations and needs to look as nice as the rest of the staircase
