As part of our continuing professional development, we’re spending the year exploring some of London’s most beautifully preserved historic homes. Our second stop: Sambourne House in Kensington.

The creative mind behind the house. Sambourne’s sharp-witted illustrations for Punch made him famous in his day

One of a terrace built speculatively in 1872 - standard Victorian architecture of the time - owners would then refurbish internally as Sambourne did making it their own

Known as Anne, Countess of Rosse’s room—note the faux-stone fireplace (actually timber), and the secret connecting door, designed to connect bedrooms security during a burglary scare. Pre a police force Londoners had to rely on locking themselves into their bedrooms at night as burglaries were so common.
