AI is designing medicines now.

Artificial intelligence is starting to play a big role in how new drugs are discovered.

Researchers are using AI systems to search huge chemical libraries and predict which molecules might work as treatments for diseases like Parkinson’s, antibiotic-resistant infections, and rare disorders.

In one recent project, scientists at MIT used generative AI to scan more than 45 million molecules. The system proposed entirely new antibiotic candidates that showed activity against drug-resistant bacteria like MRSA and gonorrhea.

Other teams are training models to find compounds that could stop the protein clumps linked to Parkinson’s disease, something researchers have struggled with for decades. AI can evaluate billions of possible molecules in days, while traditional drug discovery can take years. It can also reveal new uses for drugs that already exist.

If these tools keep improving, much of future drug discovery may start with algorithms. Would you trust an AI to help invent the medicine you take?
