From Sani Pass to Tsehlanyane National Park

A thrilling overland journey I’ve taken is the route from Sani Pass to Tsehlanyane National Park, deep in Lesotho. The adventure begins with the legendary Sani Pass, one of the most challenging 4x4 routes in Southern Africa. At an altitude of 2,876 meters (9,436 feet), the pass is not just steep but rugged, with sharp switchbacks, rocky paths, and jaw-dropping drops that test your driving skills and endurance.

Once you summit Sani Pass and cross the Lesotho border, you find yourself in the “Kingdom in the Sky.” The terrain dramatically shifts as you enter the highlands of Lesotho. The altitude remains high, averaging around 3,000 meters (9,800 feet), which means you’re driving through Africa’s highest country. Vast, rolling plateaus stretch as far as the eye can see, dotted with shepherds’ huts and grazing livestock.

The drive to Tsehlanyane National Park takes you through this rugged, undulating terrain, where you’ll encounter a mix of gravel roads, river crossings, and steep mountain passes. The park itself is a high-altitude retreat, nestled in the Maloti Mountains at over 2,000 meters (6,500 feet). Here, the lush valleys and crystal-clear mountain streams offer a stark contrast to the barren, wind-swept highlands.

Navigating these altitudes and challenging terrains is what makes this overlanding journey unforgettable. It’s a rugged route that offers both adventure and some of the most spectacular landscapes in Southern Africa.
