FROZEN NIGHTS IN AFRICA

Contrary to popular belief, nights in Africa can get seriously cold, especially at higher altitudes and in the desert. If you’re heading out on a self-drive safari in the next few months, here are a few essential tips to keep warm:

Fire: Light a fire as soon as you set up camp. Not only does it keep wildlife at bay, but it also creates a cozy spot to gather and stay warm during the chilly evening.

Layer Up: Dress in layers to trap warmth. Fleece is great for insulation but doesn’t block wind—so make sure to have a windproof and waterproof jacket handy.

Beanie Hat: You lose a lot of heat through your head, so wearing a beanie around camp is essential. Keep it on while you sleep to stay warm through the night.

Tent Setup: Proper ventilation is key, but closing your tent doors will help trap warmth. If you need air, crack open the downwind side of your tent slightly at the top to maintain airflow without losing too much heat.

Sleep Position: If you’re solo and cold, curl up in the fetal position. If you’re with someone, spooning will help share body heat.

Extreme Cold: If you’re unprepared for extreme cold, retreat to your vehicle. Start the engine briefly to warm up the interior, then turn it off to conserve fuel. In very harsh conditions, keep the engine running overnight—a diesel engine can idle all night with minimal fuel usage. Just be mindful of others nearby who may also be trying to sleep.

Winter may be over, but if you’re camping at high altitudes or in the desert, cold nights are still a reality. Be prepared and enjoy the wild in comfort!
