HUNTING WITH THE BUSHMEN
Today, I went on a hunting trip with two hunters from the Ju/‘Hoansi tribe. They are part of the San people and often wrongfully referred to as « bushmen », which is an insult.
This was such an incredible experience. Sharing with those men for one day their lives is a privilege and a honor.
I realized that hunting with a bow and arrows and a spear is far from being not easy. The arrows have a poison on them so the injured animal would not stop bleeding however small was the cut.
Usually, a walking safari is made under the supervision of a trained guide with a gun. We were using elephant trails to make easy progress in the bush and spotted lion’s tracks. It was a feeling of vulnerability as we had no guns and a feeling of confidence in those men who knew the bush like no one else.
Keeping up with them was a real challenge, they walk so fast. I offered to share my bottle of water but refused; they drink only when they get some food. They are rather small and thin. Their adaptation to the Kalahari desert is real. They can survive with little food and water.
You can hear the click sounds when they speak. They have a total of four clicks in their language.
N.B.: I have probably disturbed them on their hunting trip and I’m probably the main reason why they did not catch any game. I’m sorry for that and compensated for the loss.
