One of the biggest way to really improve the quality and feel of your thesis and even research papers is by having top notch figures. 

I know there are so many different sites and softwares out there so do find one that suits your style and budget. I just suggested biorender as that is one most people are aware of.

I look back at my PhD thesis and saw how many figures I had to copy from others or make via PowerPoint (yes PowerPoint). So if you have the funding and resources do consider a figure illustrator for your work.
